Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello, I've been using an Inkjet 6950 printer for a few years now without any issues. I have set my printer preferences so that I can use alternative cartridge suppliers. However, yesterday I received a message saying that a non-HP chip was detected and I simply can't print.

I have seen online that it is possible to download a printer downgrade so that any recent update is uninstalled. However, I can't find where to download the downgrade. I've looked on Reddit and the links are broken. Has anyone resolved this issue recently and can help? I've looked at videos online and it seems that the downgrade is the only option, other than buy HP cartridges.

Thanks for your help,

Liz

Hi @LizMason,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you're experiencing an issue with using non-HP or refilled ink cartridges on your printer.

I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused, I'm here to help you today.

Please follow the steps below to fix the issue.

A) Perform a power drain

1) Take out the cartridges

2) Unplug the power cord from the printer & wall.

3) Press and hold the power button down for 15 seconds and release the power button, wait for about 30 seconds.

4) Plug the power cord back into the printer and wall, ensure the printer is plugged into the wall & not into a surge protector.

5) Insert the cartridges back into the printer.

Remove the cartridges > Unplug the power cord > Wait for 30 seconds > Plug the power cord back in > Insert the cartridges

B) Kindly refer to the steps on this link to update the printer firmware and let me know if that resolves the issue.

C) If the issue still persists, refer to this link for more information related to using non-HP ink cartridges.

If you are using generic or Non HP ink cartridges and the above steps do not help. You will have to contact the generic ink cartridge manufacturer to assist you further with it or you will have to use genuine HP ink cartridges to resume printing.

Unfortunately, there is no option to downgarde the printer firmware once updated.

Please mark this post as “Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved and if you feel this reply was helpful click “Yes”.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a great day ahead!
