Normally YES, during the warming up process, printer checks everything including inks and it won't continue if something is not there, other functions such as Scan, Copy may also stop.
Some printers support to use single black ink only.

I only want to use BLACK INK. But my printer won't print in BLACK INK unless I buy replacements for my depleted 3 color ink cartridges which are very expensive, and I don't want them anyway! Does that mean I can't print in BLACK INK unless I have new 3-color ink cartridges?

What printer do you have? Without the model number, one can only guess and based on your current status I guess "yes" you need color cartridges to print. There are some technical reasons for that but again, without model number that is just guessing.
It would appear that @banhien has given you a reasonable answer already, but as you do not appear to like that answer you are posting hoping for a different outcome?
Post your model number and someone can answer definitively for you.

Thanks for your answer! I finally talked to a human at HP. And it turns out the Model 9015e printers must have the color ink cartridges refilled... in order to print in black ink. Since the cartridges are very expensive and the HP Rep said the machine uses color ink even when you print in black, I decided to buy a cheaper printer that will print with cheap black ink cartridges.
