Receiving an error that I cannot use the cartridges that previously were working just fine prior to moving, and having to reconnect with printer on a new wifi network.

"The indicated cartridges can only be used in the printer that initially protected these cartridges using the HP Cartridge Protection feature, and must be replaced".

These cartridges are in the same printer they have always been in. How do I get this resolved?

Hi @qwerty09876,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The error you’re experiencing with your HP printer indicates that the HP Cartridge Protection feature has locked the cartridges to a different printer, even though they were previously working fine. This often happens due to a change in the printer's network or a firmware update.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to resolve this issue:

1. Verify Printer Settings

  • Ensure Printer is Connected to the New Network: Make sure your printer is properly connected to the new Wi-Fi network.

2. Disable Cartridge Protection

Access the Printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS):

  1. Find Printer IP Address: On the printer's control panel, go to Settings -> Network Settings -> Wireless Settings, and locate the IP address.
  2. Open a Web Browser: On your computer, open a web browser and type the printer’s IP address in the address bar. This will open the Embedded Web Server.

Disable Cartridge Protection:

  1. In the EWS, navigate to the Settings or System tab.
  2. Look for HP Cartridge Protection or similar settings.
  3. Disable the Cartridge Protection feature.
  4. Save the changes and exit.

3. Reinsert the Cartridges

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Remove and reinsert the cartridges.
  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

4. Check for Firmware Updates

  • Update Printer Firmware:
    1. Go to the HP Support website.
    2. Enter your printer model and download the latest firmware update.
    3. Install the firmware update according to the instructions provided.

5. Reset the Printer

  • Factory Reset (Caution: This will reset all settings):
    1. On the printer’s control panel, navigate to Settings.
    2. Find the Restore Factory Defaults or Reset option.
    3. Confirm the reset. You may need to reconfigure the printer after this step.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
