I just bought the printer a few days ago. Followed instructions on how to set it up. When i install the printerhead, the ! Lights up. Tried removing and installing again, tricolor is ok but the black still shows up in the screen. After several retries/ reinstalls, i still am not able to test print.

Troubleshooting tips or restarts for the printerhead is much appreciated. Thank you.

Hi @LCD825,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thanks for sharing the issue, and congratulations on your new HP Smart Tank 750 printer. I understand it’s frustrating when you're just getting started and face a printhead error, especially with the black printhead showing a warning (!) despite following setup instructions carefully.

1. Check Protective Tapes

  • Remove the black printhead from the carriage.
  • Make sure all orange plastic tape and protective film have been completely removed from:
    • The copper-colored contacts.
    • The nozzle area (where ink comes out).
  • Even a small piece of tape left can trigger the warning.

⚠️ Never touch the gold contacts or ink nozzles directly.

2. Clean the Electrical Contacts

If there’s any dirt or ink residue on the contacts:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Use a lint-free cloth or microfiber (slightly dampened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol).
  • Gently clean the copper-colored contacts on both:
    • The printhead
    • The printhead carriage inside the printer
  • Let everything dry for 5 minutes, then reinstall.

3. Reinstall the Printhead

  • Insert the black printhead firmly until it clicks into place.
  • Then install the tricolor printhead.
  • Close the printhead access door.
  • Power on the printer and check the control panel or the HP Smart app.

4. Reset the Printer

If the error persists:

  1. Power on the printer.
  2. With it on, unplug the power cable from the back.
  3. Wait 60 seconds.
  4. Reconnect and turn the printer back on.
This may clear false error states in memory.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
