I had an error that cartridges are not communicating correctly with the printer. I already plug and unplug multicolor and black cartridges separately. Because the blinking error persisted, I could not apply hard or half reset the printer. Could you help me fix this issue

Hi @TaraGM,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
Thanks for reaching out — we’re sorry to hear you’re experiencing trouble with your HP Smart Tank 515, and we appreciate you already trying the plug-and-unplug steps for the cartridges.
Let’s walk through a few more steps to try and resolve the “cartridges not communicating correctly” issue. This type of error often points to a connection issue between the printhead and the printer.
Step-by-Step Troubleshooting:
1. Make Sure the Printheads Are Installed Correctly
- Power on the printer
- Open the top cover to access the cartridges
- Ensure that both the black and tri-color printheads are securely seated
- Press down gently until they click into place
2. Clean the Electrical Contacts
Sometimes, ink or dust buildup can cause poor contact:
- Turn off the printer and unplug it
- Remove both cartridges
- Use a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water to clean:
- The gold-colored contacts on the cartridges
- The matching contacts inside the printer
- Allow everything to dry for a few minutes before reinstalling
3. Perform a Semi-Reset (if possible)
You mentioned not being able to apply a hard or half reset, but once the blinking error subsides or if the screen becomes responsive, try this:
- With the printer powered on, unplug the power cable from the wall
- Wait 60 seconds
- Plug the cable back in and power the printer on
Note: Some Smart Tank models use a button combination for resets. If the printer responds, we can guide you through a semi-reset sequence.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
