Hi
I have a HP Smart Tank 570. The black ink has stopped feeding through to the print head, there is ink in the chamber.
Is there a blockage? Or, is it the print head at fault?

Hi @Flitchrider,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If the black ink in your HP Smart Tank 570 is not feeding through to the print head despite having ink in the chamber, it could be due to a blockage, an issue with the print head, or a problem with the ink delivery system. Here’s a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:
1. Check for Blockages in the Ink Delivery System:
- Ink Tubes: Inspect the ink tubes leading from the ink tank to the print head for any kinks, twists, or blockages. Ensure that the tubes are properly connected and not pinched.
- Ink Cartridge: Although you’re using a Smart Tank system, ensure that the ink supply is correctly connected and there are no obstructions.
2. Perform a Print Head Cleaning:
- Automatic Cleaning: Use the HP Smart app or the printer’s control panel to run the print head cleaning cycle. This can help clear any clogs or blockages in the print head.
- Manual Cleaning: If automatic cleaning doesn’t work, you can manually clean the print head. Follow these steps:
- Turn Off the Printer: Power off the printer and unplug it from the electrical outlet.
- Access the Print Head: Open the printer’s access door to reach the print head.
- Remove the Print Head: Carefully remove the print head from the printer.
- Clean the Print Head: Use a lint-free cloth and distilled water to gently clean the print head. Avoid using tap water or any cleaning solutions not recommended by HP.
- Reinstall the Print Head: Once clean and dry, reinstall the print head and ensure it’s properly seated.
3. Check the Ink Tank:
- Ink Levels: Verify that the black ink tank is not clogged or empty. If the ink level is low, refill it with the appropriate ink.
- Ink Flow: Ensure that the ink is flowing properly from the tank to the print head. Sometimes, air bubbles or dried ink can cause flow issues.
4. Run Printer Diagnostics:
- HP Smart App: Use the HP Smart app to run diagnostics and perform a print head alignment. The app can help identify any issues with the ink system.
- Print Quality Report: Print a quality report to check if the black ink is being used at all. This can help diagnose whether the issue is with the ink delivery system or the print head.
5. Perform a Hard Reset:
- Power Cycle: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for about 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.
- Factory Reset: If a power cycle doesn’t resolve the issue, you might need to perform a factory reset. Check the printer’s manual or HP support website for instructions on how to perform a reset.
6. Update Printer Firmware:
- Firmware Update: Check the HP support website for any available firmware updates for your model. Updating the firmware can sometimes resolve issues with ink delivery and print quality.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
