Hi @AngelSchone

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The HP Smart Tank 615 is designed to use HP ink bottles, specifically the HP 32 (black) and HP 31 (cyan, magenta, yellow) ink bottles, which are dye-based inks, not pigment-based. However, as you've mentioned, the black ink in this printer is indeed a pigment-based ink. This is because pigment ink is generally better for printing sharp text and achieving longer-lasting prints on various types of paper.

Can You Use Pigment-Based Ink for Colored Inks?

While the black ink is pigment-based, the colored inks (cyan, magenta, yellow) in the HP Smart Tank 615 are dye-based. Dye-based inks are typically used for vibrant, color-rich prints, such as photos, but they are less durable than pigment inks when exposed to light or moisture.

Pigment ink in colored prints is technically possible, but it’s not recommended because:

  1. Compatibility: Dye-based and pigment-based inks have different chemical compositions, which might not be optimized for the printhead. Mixing them could cause clogging or inconsistent print quality.
  2. Quality: While pigment ink in black may improve sharpness and longevity, switching to pigment ink for the colors could alter the vibrancy and photo-quality printing that dye inks excel at.
  3. Warranty: Using non-HP or third-party ink (such as pigment inks that are not designed for this printer) may void your warranty and could result in poor print quality or printer damage over time.

HP Ink Bottles for the Smart Tank 615

  • Black Ink (HP 32): This is pigment-based, providing durable, crisp text printing.
  • Color Inks (HP 31): These are dye-based inks for better color reproduction, especially for photos.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you! However I've been experiencing a problem when printing especially with black prints. I'm using a RC Satin Photopaper, 260gsm, my settings are set to HP Photos (so that it won't smudge) and the quality when printing is at 300 or 600 dpi - "Best".

However after printing it creates a halo or magenta lines arounf the black. Same as it shows in the photo attached.
