My recently bought HP Smart Tank 7000 gives me with every first printing activity an issue with the printhead. It says most of the time the black printhead is missing and when I remove and reinsert the printhead it sometimes resolves the issue but most of the time I have to keep on trying until it suddenly works and then I am able to print without any issues that day and if I am lucky, even multiple days. Sometimes it suddenly states both printheads are faulty but when I turn the power of and on, it magically resolves the issue. But today, after many tries, I was not able to fix the issue of the missing printhead.

What can I do best? This printer is not even three months old but it is getting annoying.

@Jeroen22, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

If you are experiencing issues with the printhead on your HP Smart Tank 7000, where it frequently reports that the black printhead is missing, here are some steps you can follow to troubleshoot and resolve the problem:

Ensure Proper Installation:

  • Turn off the printer and open the printhead access door.
  • Carefully remove the black printhead and check for any protective tapes or packaging that might not have been removed.
  • Reinsert the printhead firmly into its slot and make sure it is securely seated.

Clean Electrical Contacts:

  • Use a lint-free cloth slightly moistened with distilled water to gently clean the electrical contacts on both the printhead and the carriage in the printer.
  • Ensure the contacts are dry before reinserting the printhead.

Reset the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer, disconnect the power cord, and wait about 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord and turn on the printer. This can sometimes resolve intermittent recognition issues.

Run HP Smart:

Update Printer Firmware (Update the firmware on an HP printer | HP® Support)

  • Go to the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads page. Enter your printer model number and search for the latest firmware update. Follow the instructions to download and install the firmware update.

Perform a Printhead Cleaning:

  • Access the printer settings either through the control panel or HP software on your computer and run a printhead cleaning cycle. This can sometimes help in cases where the contacts are not properly detecting the printhead.

Check for Defects:

  • Inspect the printhead and the printer for any visible physical defects or damage. If visible damage is present, you might need to replace the printhead.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
