Thank you for the response. I already tried all these suggestions and none of them worked. I also scoured this forum, the internet, and YouTube and found nothing that worked. I wish HP provided a phone number or even a live chat to find a solution but there was none.
After spending the weekend with no success, I bought an Epson printer. Problem solved.

Hi @JK8600,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP Officejet Pro 8600 is displaying an "Incompatible ink cartridges" error message even with genuine HP replacement cartridges, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the issue. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you:
1. Check Cartridge Compatibility:
- Ensure that the replacement cartridges are the correct model for the HP Officejet Pro 8600. Refer to the printer’s manual or the HP website for the compatible cartridge numbers.
2. Remove and Reinstall Cartridges::
- Open the cartridge access door.
- Remove each cartridge carefully and check for any protective tape or packaging that may not have been removed.
- Reinstall the cartridges, ensuring they click into place and are seated correctly.
3. Inspect Cartridges for Damage:
- Inspect the cartridges for any visible damage or defects. Look for any cracks, leaks, or other signs of damage.
- Clean Contacts: Gently clean the metal contacts on the cartridges with a lint-free cloth or cotton swab lightly moistened with distilled water. Be careful not to let moisture touch other parts of the cartridge.
4. Update Printer Firmware:
- Go to the HP Support website and search for firmware updates for your HP Officejet Pro 8600.
- Follow the instructions to update the printer’s firmware. Sometimes, firmware updates resolve compatibility issues with ink cartridges.
5. Reset the Printer:
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait for about a minute, then plug it back in and turn the printer on.Check if the error message persists after the reset.
6. Perform a Cartridge Reset:
- With the printer on, open the cartridge access door.Wait for the cartridges to stop moving, then remove them.
- Wait for about 30 seconds, then reinstall the cartridges.Close the cartridge access door and check if the printer recognizes the cartridges.
7. Verify Printer Settings:
- On the printer’s control panel, navigate to Setup or Tools and find the Printer Maintenance or Cartridge Settings.
- Select Clean Cartridges or Align Cartridges to ensure that the printer is set up correctly.
8. Test with Different Cartridges:
- If you have another set of genuine HP cartridges available, try installing those to see if the issue is specific to the cartridges you initially used.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
