Hi @wkj70,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand your HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 e-All-in-One Printer (N911a) is showing a “defective cyan cartridge” error after installing a new HP cartridge. Here are some steps to help resolve the issue:

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Power Reset the Printer
    • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
    • Wait for 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.

  2. Remove and reinsert the Cyan Cartridge
    • Open the cartridge access door.
    • Remove the cyan cartridge and gently clean the copper contacts with a lint-free cloth.
    • Reinsert it firmly until it clicks into place.

  3. Check Cartridge Authenticity
    • Make sure you're using a genuine HP 951 or 951XL Cyan cartridge, which is compatible with the OfficeJet Pro 8600 series.
    • You can verify authenticity using the QR code on the cartridge or via the HP Cartridge Authentication Tool.

  4. Try a Different Cartridge (if available)
    • If you have another cyan cartridge (even a used one), try inserting it to see if the error clears.
    • This helps determine if the issue is with the cartridge or the printer.

  5. Update Printer Firmware
  6. Use HP’s Cartridge Troubleshooter

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
