HP OfficeJet 8022e All-in-One Printer

I bought this printer 3 months ago and barely use it. I had just assumed that at the very least, the ink cartridges that came with it were mine. I print an average of 10 pages a month, if that. I also don't keep it connected to the internet because I don't have wifi. I use my Hotspot from my phone when needed. Now I am getting messages on my email saying that they can't detect my printer, suggesting that the ink cartridges won't work if I don't keep it connected to the internet. The original cartridges should last at least a year at my current rate of usage. Are they really going to sabotage my printer so it won't work to force me to use their instant ink program that I don't need? I bought the printer, and any other time I purchased a printer from any company it came with ink cartridges, certainly they weren't timed and didn't auto lock. Is this legal? This feels like the ink cartridge mafia or something trying to force me to pay "insurance" for me to stay in business. Feeling pissed off.

I cannot discern from your description whether or not you signed up for the optional Instant Ink Subscription service.

If you did subscribe to Instant Ink, the following is relevant to your situation:

All ink cartridges that are activated as part of the subscription - for example, those in the printer at the time you subscribe to the Instant Ink Service - become and remain the property of HP.

All Instant Ink / Subscription ink cartridges that are sent to you during the active subscription remain the property of HP.

If you have subscribed, then the printer must be connected to the Internet (Web Services) so the service can monitor ink usage and be able to send ink when the printer notifies the service that ink is needed.

True - If have you subscribed to an Instant Ink plan but you don't use the printer regularly, the benefits of such a service are negated.

If you did not subscribe to Instant Ink, then check you ink levels - it might be time to purchase and replace depleted supplies.
