After the latest update my HP7720 has stopped working, fallen over due to the dynamic firmware installed to the cartridges.

If Ford suddenly decided if you didn't put Ford tyres on a Ford car it would not drive there would be uproar. The legality of the action would be queried because there are so many equivalent quality alternatives on the market.

So how is right for HP to decide there will only be a single point of supply for printer ink that will work with an HP printer?  I would question the legality of what you have done.

My temporary solution is to use an old and trusty Canon printer that just gets on with the job. Unless there is a fix the HP printer is away down to the dump.

Hi @Silverfox4472,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your experience. I completely understand how frustrating it must feel when your printer stops working after an update, especially when you rely on it for everyday tasks. Your feedback is important to us, and I appreciate you taking the time to explain the situation.

HP periodically releases firmware updates to enhance printer performance, security, and reliability. Some of these updates include features designed to protect the printing system and help ensure consistent print quality. Printers that support dynamic security are intended to operate with cartridges that contain original HP chips or circuitry, and they may not function with cartridges that use non-HP chips or modified circuitry.

That said, I’d truly like to help you get your HP OfficeJet Pro 7720 back up and running.

To better assist you, could you please reply with the following:

  • A clear image of the cartridges currently installed in the printer
  • The firmware version (if available) or confirmation of the recent update
  • When the issue first began
  • Whether the cartridges are Original HP or third-party, and if recently purchased, we recommend checking with the place of purchase regarding their return or warranty options

Once we have these details, we can review all available options and guide you toward the best possible resolution.

We certainly value your trust in HP and would regret seeing you move away from a printer that has otherwise served you well. Let’s work together to resolve this as quickly as possible.

Looking forward to your reply.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I've  used non OEM printer cartridges for the last few years in this machine

The problem started a couple of weeks ago after I accepted a software upgrade from you.

I believe this is a 'dynamic' issue forcing us to use HP consumables.  I am however struggling to believe this because it must be an illegal practice, non competition etc.

A message such as these are non HP cartridges and as such we cannot guarantee the print quality or longevity of the printer would surely suffice?

Kind regards

Michael McLaren
