Any advice I haven't heard already, is welcomed. Throughout the years, and with many varying HP printers, I have recently never had "one inkjet cartridge" last  to the advertised pages printed (80-180), or even close.  I have spent more on cartridges than the cost of the printer. Presently, I am in limbo with a new printer, in exchange for a defective (ink eating 4155e ) that won't allow me to set up due to code error, "hardware issue,"   I guess I have two issues, INK consumption, and HP Customer service.

@DEloise65, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

High Ink Consumption:

I understand that it can be frustrating when inkjet printers, especially budget models, seem to use cartridges faster than expected. Several factors can contribute to this, but there are also strategies you can employ to get the most out of your ink. Here are some tips:

Possible Reasons for High Ink Usage:

  • Frequent Print Jobs: If you’re printing often (especially with color prints), the printer might use more ink than anticipated.
  • Print Quality Settings: Printing at high quality uses much more ink than draft or standard settings. You can change this in the printer settings or print dialog box.
  • Idle Printing: Some printers use ink to maintain the print head (a process called "priming" or "head cleaning"). If the printer is not used for a while, it may run multiple cleaning cycles.
  • Ink Wasting: Some printers use ink even when printing black-only pages to maintain the print head's health, especially with printers that use combined color cartridges.

What You Can Do to Save Ink:

  • Adjust Print Quality Settings: Set your printer to “draft” or “economy” mode, which uses significantly less ink.
  • Use the Black and White Option: If you don’t need color prints, always select black-and-white or grayscale printing.
  • Third-Party Cartridges or Refills: Consider purchasing third-party or refilled cartridges that can be more affordable.
  • Use Printer’s Eco Mode: Many modern printers have an "eco mode" or "low ink" mode that reduces ink consumption without compromising much on quality.
  • Print Less Frequently: If you’re printing photos or graphics-heavy documents, print in batches to minimize unnecessary ink usage.

Long-Term Solution:

  • Switch to a More Efficient Printer: Consider getting a printer with a high-yield ink option (like HP's high-capacity cartridges or printers with ink tank systems, like HP's "Smart Tank"). These printers are designed to save you more in the long term by reducing ink costs.

Troubleshooting the HP 4155e Setup Error ("Hardware Issue"):

Dealing with an error like this can be incredibly frustrating, especially when you're trying to set up a printer. Let’s work through some troubleshooting steps to resolve this issue.

Steps to Troubleshoot the "Hardware Issue" on HP 4155e:

Power Cycle the Printer:

  • Unplug the printer from the power source.
  • Wait for about 60 seconds.
  • Plug the printer back in and power it on. Sometimes a reset can resolve minor issues.

Check the Printer for Obstructions:

  • Ensure there is nothing blocking the paper tray or ink cartridges.
  • If any pieces of paper are jammed, carefully remove them from the printer.

Re-seat the Ink Cartridges:

  • Open the printer’s ink cartridge area.
  • Remove the ink cartridges and then reinsert them carefully, ensuring they're seated correctly. Sometimes an improperly seated cartridge can cause errors.

Check for Firmware Updates:

  • Connect your printer to your Wi-Fi network and check for any firmware updates via the printer’s control panel or the HP Smart app on your phone or computer. Sometimes an error can be resolved by a simple firmware update.

Factory Reset:

  • If none of the above steps work, you can try performing a factory reset on the printer. This will restore it to its original settings and may resolve the issue. Typically, there is an option for a reset in the settings menu of the printer.

Check for Hardware Issues:

  • If there’s still an error message, it might be a physical problem with the printer. A "hardware issue" could refer to a malfunction in the printer’s mechanism or internal components (like a bad print head or broken sensor).

I hope these steps help resolve the issue

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.
