HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer

It was not easy canceling my ink subscription with HP. The main reason I did cancel was due to receiving ink that looks watered down.  When I spoke with the representative there was no resolution. After canceling the subscription and sending the unused ink and empty cartridges back to Hp as instructed. I started to have printing issues. I purchased HP ink compatible to my printer,  inserting it correctly, only to , received a message stating that I was using “COUNTERFEIT INK CARTRIDGES”. I purchased  the HP Ink cartridges from authorized stores such as Micro center, Target,  CVS etc. it was a waste of my money.

Hi @Kittycmtc, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
We understand that you have canceled the instant ink subscription. Once canceled, you will have to replace the cartridges with standard HP (genuine) cartridges.

We see that you are getting "Counterfeit ink cartridge" message.
If the error displays with genuine HP cartridges, select No, OK, or Continue. If the print job completes, the issue is resolved but you might need to dismiss the message every time you print until the cartridges are depleted. Otherwise continue with these steps to resolve the issue.

Reset the printer

Reset the printer to recover from printer errors or failures.

1. Press the power button to turn off the printer. If the printer does not turn off, disconnect the power cord from the printer.

2. Unplug the power cord from the power source.

3. Wait 60 seconds.

4. Connect the power cord directly to a wall outlet and to the printer.

5. Turn on the printer to complete the reset.

Replace the problem cartridge

Installing a new cartridge usually resolves cartridge errors.

1. Obtain a replacement cartridge.

>Please ensure that you have canceled the subscription.

>And once the cancelation is confirmed,  Go to the HP Store or a local retailer to find and purchase compatible supplies. HP recommends genuine HP cartridges.

2. Open the door or lid to the cartridge access area. Wait until the carriage stops moving before continuing.

3. Remove the cartridge indicated in the error message, and then insert the new cartridge into the slot.

4. Repeat these steps to replace any other cartridges indicated in the error message.

5. Close the door or lid to the cartridge access area, and then follow any instructions to align the printer.
