Hi @Emilyb8033,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding error message on printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

As your HP Officejet 6700 Premium is showing an "Ink System Failure" error after replacing the cartridges. Try these steps to fix it:

Hard Reset the Printer

  1. Turn off the printer and disconnect the power cord from both the printer and the wall.
  2. Wait for 5 minutes to allow internal memory to reset.
  3. Reconnect the power cord directly to the wall (avoid power strips).
  4. Turn the printer back on and check if the error is gone.

Reseat the Ink Cartridges

  1. Remove all ink cartridges.
  2. Power off the printer, wait 30 seconds, then turn it back on.
  3. Reinsert the cartridges carefully, ensuring they are properly clicked in.
  4. Close the printer and check for errors.

Clean the Ink Cartridge Contacts

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord.
  2. Open the cartridge door and remove all cartridges.
  3. Using a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water, clean the gold-colored contacts on the cartridges and the corresponding printer contacts.
  4. Allow the contacts to dry for a minute, then reinsert the cartridges.
  5. Plug in and turn on the printer to check if the error is resolved.

Run an Ink System Reset (If Supported)

Some HP printers have a built-in ink system reset:

  1. Remove the ink cartridges.
  2. Unplug the power cord while the printer is on.
  3. Hold the Power button for 30 seconds.
  4. Plug the printer back in, turn it on, and reinstall the ink cartridges.

Check for Firmware Updates

Sometimes, outdated firmware can cause ink detection issues.

  • Go to HP’s support website and check for firmware updates for your Officejet 6700 Premium.
  • If an update is available, install it via HP Smart or HP Support Assistant.

Use Genuine HP Ink

  • If you're using third-party or refilled cartridges, the printer may not recognize them properly.
  • Try genuine HP ink cartridges if you suspect compatibility issues.

Perform a Semi-Full Reset

If nothing works, a semi-full reset might help:

  1. On the printer’s touchscreen, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore Defaults.
  2. Select "Restore Factory Defaults" and confirm.
  3. The printer will reboot and reset all settings.

Let me know which step worked for you! 😊
