HP continues to ignore the problem many HP users have where we can't use non-HP ink in OUR printers. That is completely unacceptable and only causes loyal HP customers to never support HP again.  What is the solution to defeat the error?

Hi @goffprof

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand your frustration regarding the compatibility of non-HP ink cartridges with your HP 7740 printer. HP designs its printers to work optimally with original HP ink cartridges to ensure quality, reliability, and to maintain the warranty of the device. Using non-HP ink can sometimes lead to compatibility issues, including error messages that prevent printing.

HP printers are equipped with technology that detects whether cartridges are genuine HP products. This is meant to prevent issues such as poor print quality, printer damage, and to protect against counterfeit cartridges.

Here are some general steps and information regarding this issue:

Error Messages and Warnings:

  • If you are receiving error messages due to non-HP ink cartridges, these typically cannot be bypassed without affecting printer functionality or risking damage.

Cartridge Warranty and Printer Warranty:

  • HP's warranty typically does not cover damage resulting from the use of non-HP ink. The printer’s performance could be compromised, and in some instances, it might void the warranty.

Using Original HP Supplies:

  • HP recommends using original HP supplies to ensure the best performance, reliability and to avoid these types of error messages.

HP Rewards for Using Genuine Supplies:

  • HP often provides rewards for using only genuine HP supplies, which can be an added benefit for customers.

At this time, there is no official way to bypass the error messages related to using non-HP ink cartridges that is supported or recommended by HP. Using compatible cartridges not verified by HP may affect print quality and printer functionality negatively.

Hawks Eye- your response was another canned HP non-response to a legitimate problem that resulted in a class-action lawsuit.  More are coming as the CA suit settlement did not address the fundamental issue of HP dictating what ink can be used in customer-owned printers.  That ridiculous premise is simply not acceptable.  Rather than continuing to respond with non-responses, HP should consider the simplest fix is to issue a software update to unlock the printer ink restrictions, thereby retaining existing customers who will buy new HP products.  Admit that this was a bad HP business decision that is causing irreparable harm to customers and to HP. Someone at HP should simply fix the problem, apologize to customers, and do the right thing instead of the wrong thing.  Getting ahead of this will help HP marketing in the future.
