Installed new HP ink cartridge #63xl,  Screen keeps saying rremove and re-install ink cartridge making sue it is installed correctly.  After many unsuccessful tries I put another brand new cartridge in and it still says remove and reinstall cartridge etc.  I tried turning off power and disconecting the wires to no avail.  I am a novice and completely lost.  HELP!

@xtece, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

It sounds like your printer's got a bit of a stubborn streak going on! 😅 Let’s try to get it back in action and printing like a pro.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot your issue with the HP printer:

1. Check Cartridge for Proper Installation

  • Double-check that the ink cartridge is genuinely installed correctly. Sometimes it might seem like it's in, but isn’t fully seated.
  • Open the printer’s ink cartridge access door. Gently remove the cartridge.
  • Look inside the printer for any tape or protective plastic that might still be on the cartridge. Make sure it's removed before reinstalling the new cartridge.

2. Clean the Contacts

  • The ink cartridge has metal contacts that the printer uses to recognize it. If there’s dirt or ink buildup on the contacts, the printer might not recognize the cartridge.
  • Power off your printer.
  • Remove the ink cartridge, and gently clean the metal contacts using a soft, lint-free cloth (slightly dampened with water).
  • Let the cartridge dry completely before reinserting it.

3. Check for Software/Driver Issues

  • Sometimes the printer may not sync properly with your computer because of outdated or missing drivers.
  • Visit HP’s official website, and check if you have the latest drivers installed for your printer model. Download and install any updates available.
  • Restart your computer and printer to ensure everything syncs up properly.

4. Reset Printer

  • Ensure the printer is plugged directly into a wall outlet, not a surge protector or extension cord.
  • Remove the ink cartridges from the printer.
  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer and unplug it from the wall outlet. Also, remove any USB cable, if connected.
  • Wait for 2-3 minutes, then press and hold the printer’s power button for about 30 seconds to drain any residual charge.
  • Plug the power cord back into the printer and directly into the wall outlet.
  • Turn on the printer and wait for it to complete its warm-up and reach an idle state.
  • Once the printer is idle, reinstall the ink cartridges and print a test page to check if it functions correctly.

5. Check for Firmware Updates

  • Occasionally, printers have firmware issues that cause unexpected behavior. Look for any available updates by going to the printer's settings menu or the HP website.

6. Perform a Printer Self-Test

  • Some printers have a diagnostic tool built into the system. Try printing a test page or running a self-diagnostic to see if the printer recognizes the cartridge after doing all the other steps.

I know this can be super frustrating, but don’t worry, we’re almost there! Give it a shot, and if it still won’t cooperate, we’ll figure out the next step together. You’re so close to victory, you can almost smell the printer paper! 😁

Good luck!

Take care and have a good day.
