Hi @Carol3714,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP DeskJet 8720 is not printing and is showing a “problem with the supply system” message even after inserting a new HP ink cartridge. Let’s go through a few steps to resolve this issue.

Check Cartridge Compatibility

Ensure you are using genuine HP ink cartridges that are compatible with the DeskJet 8720 (HP 952/952XL or 956XL depending on your region).

If the cartridge is from a different region, it may not work with your printer.

Reseat the Cartridges

With the printer powered on, open the ink cartridge access door.

Remove the new cartridges and inspect them for protective tape or packaging material that hasn’t been removed.

Reinsert each cartridge firmly into its slot until it clicks into place.

Clean Cartridge and Electrical Contacts

Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.

Remove the cartridges and gently clean the copper-colored electrical contacts on the cartridges and inside the printer using a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water.

Allow contacts to dry completely before reinserting.

Power Reset the Printer

With the printer on, unplug the power cord from the rear of the printer and the wall outlet.

Wait at least 60 seconds.

Plug the power cord back in directly to the wall (not a surge protector) and turn the printer back on.

Update Printer Firmware

Sometimes firmware updates address cartridge recognition issues.

Go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Update the Printer (from the control panel) or update using HP Smart / HP Support Assistant.

Try Another Cartridge (If Available)

If possible, test with another new genuine HP cartridge. The one you installed may be defective.

I hope this helps.
