Hi @Helpplease1231,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
Thank you for sharing the photo. The part you’re holding is the encoder strip, a thin transparent strip with fine markings that runs across the printer carriage. It helps the printer determine the exact position of the printhead during printing.
Why It Came Out
- The encoder strip can come loose if the carriage is moved forcefully or during cleaning.
- Without it, the printer cannot properly align the printhead, and printing will fail.
How to Fix It
- Power Off the Printer
- Unplug the printer to avoid accidental movement.
- Unplug the printer to avoid accidental movement.
- Locate Mounting Points
- The encoder strip should run horizontally behind the carriage.
- One end attaches to a small hook or slot on the left side, and the other end attaches to the right side near the carriage motor.
- Reinstall the Strip
- Slide the strip through the carriage slot (usually a small gap behind the printhead carriage).
- Attach both ends securely to their hooks.
- Ensure the strip is straight and taut, not twisted.
- Clean the Strip (Optional)
- Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
- Wipe gently to remove ink or dust.
- Restart and Test
- Plug the printer back in and run an alignment test.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have an amazing day!
