Hi @Jessisgirl,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are trying to configure your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 to print with only the black ink cartridge, you can use the following steps. Note that some functions might be limited depending on the printer's firmware or settings:
1. Enable Grayscale Printing:
- Open the document or file you want to print.
- Select Print (usually found under the File menu).
- Choose your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 from the list of printers.
- Click on Printer Properties, Preferences, or Advanced Settings (this varies depending on the software).
- Under Color Options, select Print in Grayscale or Black Ink Only.
- Click OK and print.
2. Check the Printer Settings:
- Access the printer’s settings menu from the control panel on the printer.
- Navigate to Setup > Preferences (or a similar option).
- Look for a setting like Use Black Ink Only or Grayscale Printing and enable it.
3. Override Low Ink Warnings (if necessary):
- The printer might require all cartridges to be installed and have some ink, even if you're using only black ink. If a cartridge is empty or not detected:
- Install a non-empty color cartridge, even if you don't intend to use it.
- Reset the printer and check the Print in Grayscale settings.
4. Firmware Updates:
- Ensure your printer's firmware is up to date. Outdated firmware may restrict single-cartridge printing. You can download updates via the HP website.
5. Replace Color Cartridges (if required):
- Unfortunately, some HP printers are designed to use all cartridges for maintenance purposes and might not allow printing with a single cartridge. In such cases, you may need to keep all cartridges installed, even if only the black one is used for printing.
6. Use HP Smart App:
- Open the HP Smart app on your computer or smartphone.
- Select the printer and go to Print Settings.
- Adjust the print mode to Black & White or Grayscale.
If your printer does not allow single-cartridge printing despite these settings, it might be due to its hardware design requiring all cartridges to be present and functional. Let me know if you need further assistance!
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
