"Cartridge Protection" is not the switching on/off of the type (manufacturer) of cartridges that are supported for use in your printer.
Cartridge Protection is used, for example, in a Work environment (or any place where cartridge theft might be an issue). Switching on the protection locks the installed ink cartridges to the printer. This means if anyone removes the cartridges and tries to use them in a different printer, the cartridges will not work.
The feature you are trying to bypass is the Dynamic Security built into the printer that can prevent the use of Non-HP ink cartridges.
This printer is protected by Dynamic Security.
There is no workaround, there is no way to "remove" the protection.
Explanation / Discussion
All Firmware installed on the printer, including the firmware that came on the printer, enforces the policy.
