I recently removed each of my toners to shake them like someone instructed me to do years ago, they said that I needed to do that to get more use out of a toner, so for years I did just that, Take them out, shake them a little, put them back in and they would work for a while longer. This worked for years until in 2024 I purchased a HP LaserJet Pro 3301cdw from CostCo. and in 2025 I decided to do the shake thing, I did it and put the toners back in the printer and several of the toners dropped colored powder on the black Transfer Roller. Now every time I print I have spots of color on the newly printed pages. I am now opening up the back then closing it so that the Transfer Roller moves, then I wipe across the Transfer Roller to remove the powder, but it is only a small part that I am able to clean and I have done it 50+ times and still haven't removed all of it. I would like to be able to remove it and wipe the whole thing down at once, does anyone know how to do that?

Hi @HeavenMade,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can imagine how frustrating this must be, especially after years of doing something that worked before, only to have it cause a mess now. The colored spots on your prints and the powder on the transfer roller are classic signs of toner spillage, and shaking cartridges can sometimes lead to this on newer models like the HP LaserJet Pro 3301cdw, which use more precise toner distribution systems.

Let’s go through the recommended steps to fix this safely.

Why This Happened

Modern HP LaserJet printers use high-efficiency toner cartridges with sealed systems. Shaking them can break the seal or cause toner leakage, which then contaminates the transfer roller. This roller is critical for image transfer, so any toner residue will show as spots or streaks.

Recommended Solution

Unfortunately, HP does not recommend removing the transfer roller yourself, as it is a delicate component and improper handling can damage the printer. Instead:

  1. Power Off and Unplug the Printer
    • Always disconnect power before cleaning internal components.

  2. Access the Transfer Roller Area
    • Open the rear access door and gently rotate the roller using the gear on the side.
    • Use a lint-free, dry cloth or a slightly damp cloth with distilled water (never alcohol or harsh cleaners).
    • Wipe gently, do not apply pressure or scratch the roller.

  3. Repeat Until Clean
    • Rotate the roller slowly and clean all exposed areas.
    • Avoid touching the roller with your bare hands (oil from your skin can damage it).

  4. If Spots Persist
    • The contamination may be deep inside the roller fibers. In this case, HP recommends replacing the transfer roller assembly.
