I'm trying to get my printer up and running. It's a HP Deskjet 2823e.

So I've done all the initial unpack and set up, but it's not printing properly, it's all streaky.

I have the piece of paper that it prints out, that has a title saying "Alignment required for best print quality". I put that in the printer and pressed copy... which it just copies the same thing... How do I do the alignment, I want ro be able to print stuff and I can't!! Shouldn't be so hard...

Help! Thank you

Hi @Samno333,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can feel how frustrating it is when your new HP DeskJet 2823e All-in-One Printer won’t align properly and keeps printing streaky pages. You're doing everything right by trying to follow the alignment instructions, and I’m here to guide you through the correct steps to fix this.

When your printer prints an alignment page, it’s not meant to be copied; instead, it needs to be scanned to complete the alignment process.

Follow These Steps:

  1. Load the Alignment Page on the Scanner Glass
    • Place the printed alignment page face down on the scanner glass.
    • Align it with the front-right corner as marked on the glass.

  2. Start the Alignment Scan
    • On the printer control panel, press the Start Copy Black or Start Copy Color button.
    • The printer will scan the page and complete the alignment.

  3. Wait for Confirmation
    • If successful, the printer will stop blinking and return to ready mode.
    • You can now try printing a test page to check quality.

If Print Quality Is Still Poor

Try these additional steps:

  • Run a Printhead Cleaning from the HP Smart app:
    • Open the app > Select your printer > Go to Tools or Settings > Choose Clean Printhead.
  • Make sure you're using plain white paper and genuine HP ink cartridges.
  • Check for any protective tape still on the cartridges.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Hi @Samno333,

Thank you for reaching out about your HP DeskJet 2823e All-in-One Printer. I’ll be happy to clarify this for you.

On your printer, the Copy and Scan functions both use the scanner glass, but they are designed for different purposes:

  • Copy: When you press the copy button on the printer’s control panel, the printer scans your document and immediately prints a duplicate. This works even if your computer is turned off or not connected to the internet. It’s a quick way to make paper copies directly from the printer.

  • Scan: Scanning does not automatically create a printed copy. Instead, the printer captures a digital image of your document and sends it to your computer or mobile device through the HP Smart app. From there, you can save, edit, or share the scanned file.

So while the scanner hardware is the same, Copy = Scan + Print automatically, and Scan = Scan only, saved digitally.

I hope this helps.
