The black ink is not dark enough and there is no option to increase the density when printing a PDF dox. Attached are the option from HP Smart app.
Any help is appreciated
Thanks

Hi @Hank78,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be glad to help you!
I understand how frustrating it can be when your printouts aren't coming out as dark as you'd like, especially when you're trying to print important documents. Let’s try to adjust the settings to get the quality you’re aiming for.
- Are you printing in "Draft" or "Normal" mode, or do you have it set to "Best" quality for the highest density?
- Have you checked if your printer's ink cartridges are running low or have uneven ink distribution?
- Are you printing directly from the HP Smart app, or is it being sent through another application like Adobe Acrobat for the PDF?
Let's try these steps.
Adjust Print Quality Settings in HP Smart App:
- Open the HP Smart app, go to Printer Settings, and under Print Quality, select Best or High quality to increase the ink density.
- Also, look for a Density setting under the Advanced print settings to increase the blackness of the ink.
Check Ink Levels:
- In the HP Smart app, check the Ink Levels for all your cartridges. If the black ink is low or not printing correctly, replacing the cartridge could resolve the issue.
Use the PDF Printer Settings:
- When printing a PDF, check if the PDF viewer (like Adobe Acrobat Reader) has any print settings for Brightness or Density. Set them to darker or higher density.
- Ensure you are not printing in Grayscale or Economy mode if you want the color and density to be richer.
Update Printer Firmware and Drivers:
- Make sure your printer firmware is up to date through the HP Smart app or the HP Support website. Sometimes, software updates can unlock additional settings or improve printing quality.
- Update your printer drivers on your PC by going to Device Manager > Printers > HP Printer > Update Driver.
Perform Printer Maintenance:
- Run a printer cleaning cycle through the HP Smart app to ensure that the black ink nozzle is functioning properly and there's no clogging.
- Perform a Printhead Alignment through the printer’s control panel to improve print quality and ink distribution.
You may also refer to this document for other print quality issues.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Hello ELONi-NR
This is a new printer and I've done all of the HP setup instructions. The ink cartridges are new.
I've created a new Preset for the printer in HP Smart but I can't find a way to make it the default setting for printing.
How can I make this happen?
Thanks
Hank
