I cancelled my Instant Ink service (I don't print enough for it to be cost-effective, so switching to store-bought cartridges) and upon cancelling, or maybe a day before, I got a notice that new printer cartridges were shipped.  My printer is not yet out of ink, but I understand that HP ships a little ahead of the need for them.

I have the unopened box from HP and I plan to tell the USPS that I don't accept the package.  Should I instead ask HP for a RMA number?  (Since HP Instant Ink is a subscription service paid by the month, not by the cartridge, I understand that returning them or not does not result in a credit.)

There are many answers here as to what to with opened/used cartridges after ending the subscription.  I understand that - send them in to be recycled - but I am specifically asking about unused cartridges, still in their wrappers, still in the unopened box they were mailed in.  I understand that, as cartridges configured to be used with HP Instant Ink, they cannot be repurposed by the public for use in someone else's printer.

Do we just throw unopened, new, unused, pristine, expensive-to-make printer cartridges in the trash?  These have to go to cost a lot make, so it would be an economic and environmental waste to just dispose of them.

Hi @Chancey33,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be happy to help you!

HP Instant Ink cartridges are the property of HP and must be returned when empty, or when your service is canceled.

Postage-paid cartridge recycling envelopes are included with most HP Instant Ink shipments*. To maximize environmental benefits, wait until you have three to eight empty cartridges, fill the envelope, and then send them back together.

If you do not have a postage-paid recycling envelope, either wait for the next ink shipment or order an extra envelope from your Instant Ink account page.

*Cartridge recycling is not available in Italy or Portugal. Follow local regulations to dispose of cartridges responsibly.

   NOTE:

If you have standard, non-HP Instant Ink cartridges you want to recycle, go to Product return and recycling (in English).

Sign in to hpinstantink.com/signin.

Your HP Instant Ink account page opens.

On your HP Instant Ink account page, click Order a Cartridge Recycling Envelope in the Help Center area.

Clicking Order a cartridge recycling envelope in the Help Center

Review your order, and then click Submit.

I hope that answers your concern adequately. Let me know!

I’m sorry I was so confusing in my description of the issue. but I don’t know another way of stating this more clearly:

Hi @Chancey33 ,

You need to return all the unused items, including those that are wrapped, to HP
