I bought an off brand of ink cartridges for HP deskjet 4155e. The printer is unable to read the cartridge. How can I override this "ink protection" HP put on its machines to monopolize the ink market? I have tried to disable the ink protection and took out ink and unplugged for 10 mins. Neither worked. Help please.

Hi @Oceanview5300,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are trying to turn off cartridge protection on your HP DeskJet 4155e and allow the use of third-party ink cartridges, follow these steps:
1. Disable Cartridge Protection from HP Smart App or Printer Software:
HP Smart App (Windows or Mac): HP printer setup (HP Smart app)
- Open the HP Smart app on your computer.
- Go to Printer Settings or Advanced Settings.
- Find the HP Cartridge Protection settings.
- Disable the Cartridge Protection feature.
HP Printer Software (Windows):
- Open HP Printer Assistant on your computer.
- Select Print & Scan or Printer Maintenance.
- Click on Device Settings or Advanced Settings.
- Find and disable Cartridge Protection.
Embedded Web Server (EWS) Method: Use the HP printer Embedded Web Server (EWS)
- Ensure your printer is connected to your network (via Wi-Fi or Ethernet).
- Open a web browser and type the printer’s IP address in the address bar (you can find the IP address by printing a network configuration page from the printer).
- This will open the Embedded Web Server (EWS).
- Navigate to the Settings or Tools tab, then look for HP Cartridge Protection.
- Disable Cartridge Protection.
2. Reset Printer to Factory Settings (if needed):
- If disabling cartridge protection doesn’t work, try resetting the printer:
- Turn off the printer.
- Disconnect the power cable from the printer.
- Wait for at least 60 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cable and turn on the printer.
- After restarting, attempt to disable cartridge protection again using the methods above.
