I bought an off brand of ink cartridges for HP deskjet 4155e. The printer is unable to read the cartridge. How can I override this "ink protection" HP put on its machines to monopolize the ink market? I have tried to disable the ink protection and took out ink and unplugged for 10 mins. Neither worked. Help please.

Hi @Oceanview5300,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are trying to turn off cartridge protection on your HP DeskJet 4155e and allow the use of third-party ink cartridges, follow these steps:

1. Disable Cartridge Protection from HP Smart App or Printer Software:

HP Smart App (Windows or Mac): HP printer setup (HP Smart app)

  1. Open the HP Smart app on your computer.
  2. Go to Printer Settings or Advanced Settings.
  3. Find the HP Cartridge Protection settings.
  4. Disable the Cartridge Protection feature.

HP Printer Software (Windows):

  1. Open HP Printer Assistant on your computer.
  2. Select Print & Scan or Printer Maintenance.
  3. Click on Device Settings or Advanced Settings.
  4. Find and disable Cartridge Protection.

Embedded Web Server (EWS) Method:  Use the HP printer Embedded Web Server (EWS)

  1. Ensure your printer is connected to your network (via Wi-Fi or Ethernet).
  2. Open a web browser and type the printer’s IP address in the address bar (you can find the IP address by printing a network configuration page from the printer).
  3. This will open the Embedded Web Server (EWS).
  4. Navigate to the Settings or Tools tab, then look for HP Cartridge Protection.
  5. Disable Cartridge Protection.

2. Reset Printer to Factory Settings (if needed):

  • If disabling cartridge protection doesn’t work, try resetting the printer:
    1. Turn off the printer.
    2. Disconnect the power cable from the printer.
    3. Wait for at least 60 seconds.
    4. Reconnect the power cable and turn on the printer.
    5. After restarting, attempt to disable cartridge protection again using the methods above.
