How to use ink from a previously registered printer

I have ink that I paid for from a printer I is now no longer registered on this site. How do I use the ink without being told that I have to have an account with HP printing service. I remembered being told that I can still use the ink or send it back which isn't fair at all.

If you are referring to an Instant Ink Print-by-Page subscription,

Ink is provided for the printer that is subscribed to the service while the subscription plan is active.

All Instant Ink cartridges and cartridges activated as part of the Instant Ink subscription remain the property of HP.

After the contract is terminated, Instant Ink cartridges lock and cannot be used in any printer.

True:  Instant Ink cartridges, no longer usable, should be returned to HP. 

Also true:  HP is not going to track you down for the purpose of recovering the cartridges. 

Cartridges can be returned to HP for free.
