Hi @hurricanerick, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Your printer’s suddenly gone abstract artist on you, huh? 🎨 Streaks and weird colors definitely aren’t part of the design!
Here’s how to fix the issue:
Check Ink Levels
- Open the HP Smart app or the printer’s control panel.
- Check the ink levels and replace any cartridges that are low or empty.
Clean the Printheads
- On the printer’s control panel, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Clean Printhead.
- Follow the on-screen instructions. You may need to run the cleaning process multiple times.
Print a Test Page
- Print a Print Quality Diagnostic Page:
- Go to Setup > Reports > Print Quality Report.
- If you see gaps or streaks in the color bars, a second printhead cleaning may be needed.
Align the Printhead
- Go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Align Printhead.
- Follow the prompts and print an alignment page.
Check for Clogged Nozzles
- If streaks persist, remove the ink cartridges and gently clean the nozzles with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
- Let them dry before reinserting.
Update Printer Firmware
- Visit HP Support to check for firmware updates.
- In the HP Smart app, go to Advanced Settings > Printer Updates.
Use Genuine HP Ink
- If you’re using third-party cartridges, consider switching to genuine HP cartridges, as they work best with HP printheads.

Thank you Kuroi for your suggestions. I have actually done all those things you mentioned, including cleaning the black cartridge with a clean cloth and distilled water. The tri-color cartridge tested perfectly fine, but the black cartridge would not even after I cleaned it. Thinking it was the driver because it is an older printer that was working fine with my Windows 10 HP laptop; but this ugliness started with my new HP Windows 11 laptop. Anyway, I downloaded the HP Smart App and the "recommended" driver went through all the layers until I got a page with "Windows 11 and HP Envy 7640 are NOT supported."
I'm looking for a new printer now. Thank you again for trying to help.
