Hi @Kate0224,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
We understand that your HP Smart Tank 580 is leaking black ink beneath the printer, and we're here to assist you with this concern.
Ink leakage can be caused by a few key issues in Smart Tank printers, and we’ll walk you through the steps to identify and resolve the problem.
1. Inspect the Ink Tank and Bottle Area
- Make sure the black tank is not filled beyond the MAX line.
- Check that the cap on the black tank is closed tightly.
- Wipe around the tank opening with a lint-free cloth to remove excess ink.
2. Check for Ink Around the Printhead Area
- Open the printer cover and inspect the printhead and carriage area for visible ink pooling or splashes.
- Carefully blot any excess ink with a damp, lint-free cloth.
3. Check the Ink Absorber/Pad (if accessible)
- Some ink may be absorbed by an internal ink service station or pad.
- If the pad is saturated or visibly soaked, it could be leaking ink onto your surface.
4. Place the Printer on a Disposable Surface Temporarily
- To avoid damage to furniture or flooring, place the printer on newspaper or absorbent material until the issue is resolved.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
