Hi @Rjs15,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
When an HP 962 cartridge is not recognized by your printer even after cleaning, reinstalling, and resetting it usually points to one of these issues:
Common Causes
- The cartridge chip is damaged or dirty
- Printer firmware blocking non-genuine or expired cartridges
- Cartridge lock due to HP Instant Ink subscription
- Electrical contact issue inside the printer
Here’s what you can do:
Step 1: Verify Cartridge Authenticity
- Make sure the cartridge is a genuine HP and not expired.
- Check the label and hologram for authenticity.
👉 HP anti-counterfeit | HP® Official Site
Step 2: Clean Electrical Contacts
- Power off the printer.
- Remove the cartridge and gently clean the gold contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
- Let it dry completely before reinstalling.
Step 3: Update Printer Firmware
- Outdated firmware can block cartridges. 👉 Official HP® Support
- Enter your printer model and install the latest firmware.
Step 4: Reset the Printer
- Perform a Semi-Full Reset:
- Turn off the printer.
- Unplug for 60 seconds.
- Plug back in while holding Cancel + Wireless buttons for 10 seconds.
Step 5: Check HP Account (If Instant Ink)
- Log in to your HP Instant Ink account: 👉 HP Instant Ink – Ink Monthly Subscription | HP Official Site
- Ensure your subscription is active. If paused or cancelled, the cartridge will not work.
Step 6: Try Another Cartridge
If possible, insert a different HP 962 cartridge. If the new one works, the old cartridge is defective.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have an amazing day!

I had already cleaned the contacts on the print cartridge, but it’s had an occurred to me to clean the context deep inside of the printer where it plugs in I used a Q-tip and isopropyl alcohol and as soon as I put the cartridge in it was recognized. I appreciate the helpfulness and the thoroughness of the response.

I’m really glad to hear you got it working, and great job thinking to clean the internal printer contacts as well! That’s an easy step to overlook, and it often ends up being the key fix for recognition issues.
Thank you for taking the time to share what worked. It’ll definitely help others who run into the same problem. If anything else comes up with your HP printer, feel free to reach out anytime. I’m here to help! 😊
