I have an Office Jet 5255 that has always worked until I just replaced with an HP black cartridge. The alignment page had a red IMPORTANT WITH RED TRIANGLE AND RED ARROW POINTING DOWN. NOW NOTHING IS PRINTING. NO ONE SEEMS TO BE ABLE TO ASSIST ME.

Hi @GE69,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I see that you are facing an issue with your printer that has an error.
A) Please follow the steps below to perform a power drain.
1) Take out the cartridges
2) Unplug the power cord from the printer & wall.
3) Press and hold the power button down for 15 seconds and release the power button, wait for about 30 seconds.
4) Plug the power cord back into the printer and wall, ensure the printer is plugged into the wall & not into a surge protector.
5) Insert the old cartridge into the printer.
Remove the cartridges > Unplug the power cord > Wait for 30 seconds > Plug the power cord back in > Insert the cartridges
B) Kindly refer to the steps on this link to update the printer firmware and let me know if that resolves the issue.

Thank you for getting back to me but I was able to solve the problem before your email arrived, I believe. I unplugged everything as you stated and sat and looked at the alignment page. It was in a faint color so I tried putting a black ink cartridge in the color ink slot but it would not fit easily so I had another new black ink cartridge so I replaced the brand new cartridge that I had placed in the black ink slot with another new cartridge. The alignment page printed and scanned and viola - my printer started working just beautifully. I am sending back the brand new HP black ink cartridge as I believe it was defective. It was brand new, sent to me by HP, and I put it in several times thinking I was not putting it in right. Now that I understand the alignment page should have been black, I believe the printer went to the colored ink slot because the black ink cartridge was not recognizable. I hope I will be reimbursed for this defective cartridge. I am returning it in the mail envelope provided by HP for recycling.
