A week ago my printer was working fine. Suddenly, I started seeing cartridge light blinking and tri-color cartridge in display blinking. Upon inspection and searching the web, I used the button combination (power + 4x cancel + color copy) to find out the error: Pen in left chute has error (22).
Why is this happening? How do I resolve this issue?
Additionally, I forgot my EWS password and now unable to connect to it. Please tell me how to reset the password. I've tried everything I found on the web.

HI @ptg25,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're facing a couple of issues with your HP DeskJet GT 5821 printer: a cartridge communication error and trouble accessing the Embedded Web Server (EWS) due to a forgotten password. Here's how you can address both issues:
Resolving the Cartridge Communication Error
The error code "Pen in left chute has error (22)" typically indicates a problem with the printhead or cartridge area. Here are steps to troubleshoot and potentially resolve this issue:
1. Turn Off and Restart the Printer
- Turn off the printer using the power button.
- Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet and wait for about 60 seconds.
- Plug the power cord back in and turn on the printer.
- Check if the error persists.
2. Inspect and Reseat the Cartridges
- Open the cartridge access door.
- Remove the ink cartridges carefully.
- Check for any protective tape or packaging material on the cartridges and remove it.
- Reinstall the cartridges, making sure they are properly seated and clicked into place.
3. Clean the Cartridge Contacts
- Look at the metal contacts on the cartridges and inside the printer where the cartridges make contact.
- Use a soft, lint-free cloth slightly moistened with distilled water to clean the contacts. Be careful not to touch the ink nozzles.
- Allow the contacts to dry completely before reinstalling the cartridges.
4. Check for Obstructions
- Check the printer’s interior for any paper or debris that might be obstructing the cartridge area.
- Clear any obstructions you find.
5. Perform a Hard Reset
- Turn off the printer and unplug it.
- Wait for 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.
6. Update Printer Firmware
- Visit the HP website or use the HP Smart app to check for and install any firmware updates.:
- Follow the instructions to complete the firmware update.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
