A new 60XL cartridge for my Officejet 4500 printer gives me the error message "incompatible"  yet when I put the old cartridge back min it is accepted.  They look identicle on the outside although the label on the are different.  Any suggestions?

Hi @golddog7 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with your HP Officejet 4500 printer is having trouble recognizing the new HP 60XL cartridge, despite it looking identical to the old one. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot this issue:

1. Verify Cartridge Compatibility

  • Check the packaging of the new cartridge to ensure it is truly compatible with your printer. HP 60XL cartridges are supposed to work with the HP Officejet 4500, but there could be variations in regional models (for example, a cartridge meant for a different region might not work).
  • Compare part numbers on the old and new cartridges to see if there’s any noticeable difference. Even slight differences in numbers might indicate a regional or technical difference.

Please check the screenshot for the cartridge for your region

2. Check Cartridge Installation

  • Reinsert the cartridge: Ensure the cartridge is seated properly in its slot. Remove the new cartridge and then carefully insert it again, making sure it clicks into place.
  • Clean the copper contacts: Dust or debris on the cartridge contacts can cause errors. Gently clean the copper contacts on the cartridge with a lint-free cloth or cotton swab lightly moistened with distilled water.
  • Clean the printer's contacts: Similarly, clean the copper contacts inside the cartridge slot in your printer to ensure a good connection.

3. Reset the Printer

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for about 2 minutes.
  • Plug the printer back in, turn it on, and try installing the new cartridge again.

4. Firmware Update Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Ensure your printer’s firmware is up to date. Sometimes, older firmware versions may not recognize newer cartridge models. Visit the HP support website to check for and install any available updates for your printer model.

5. Check for Defective Cartridge

  • Test the new cartridge on another compatible printer (if possible) to check if it’s a defective cartridge.

6. Try Printer Alignment Process

  • If the printer doesn’t recognize the cartridge, it might still allow you to align it. This can sometimes reset the printer’s recognition of the cartridge.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
