Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP OfficeJet 8600 is having trouble recognizing the new black ink cartridge and is showing it as empty, along with the color cartridges being empty. This can be frustrating, but there are several steps you can take to resolve this issue:
1. Check Cartridge Installation
- Ensure the cartridge is installed correctly. Sometimes a cartridge may not be fully seated, even though it appears to be.
- Remove the black ink cartridge, then reinstall it, making sure it clicks into place properly.
2. Clean the Ink Cartridge Contacts
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Remove the black ink cartridge.
- Use a clean, lint-free cloth and lightly dampen it with water or rubbing alcohol.
- Gently clean the gold-colored contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer where the cartridge connects (be careful not to damage any parts).
- Reinstall the black ink cartridge and check if it is recognized.
3. Perform a Printer Reset
- Sometimes a reset can clear any lingering issues with ink cartridge recognition.
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait for at least 1-2 minutes to allow the printer to reset fully.
- Plug the printer back in and power it on.
- Check the ink cartridge levels again to see if the issue is resolved.
4. Check for Printer Firmware Updates
- Sometimes the issue might be related to outdated printer firmware.
- Go to the HP support website and enter your printer model (HP OfficeJet 8600) to check if there are any available firmware updates.
- Install the latest firmware if available, and then check the ink cartridge levels again.
5. Reset the Ink Cartridges
Some users have found that performing an ink cartridge reset can help fix issues with new cartridges not being recognized.
Steps to reset ink cartridges:
- Turn off the printer and unplug it.
- Remove all ink cartridges from the printer.
I hope this helps.
