I inherited a very nice HP computer and printer and have used it for a year +.  Everything has been fine until a cartridge became low.  I switched it out with a new HP cartridge and then the message I got was that it wouldn't work until I enrolled in Instant Ink!  I don't want to enroll in anything.  How do I make this printer accept my cartridges?

I inherited this printer from a deceased relative.  When I changed a cartridge it told me that the cartridge was not enrolled in "Instant Ink."  I want to use ink that I have purchase on my own.  I have plenty.  What do I do?

Hi @Rickity2020

Welcome to the HP support community.

I understand you're experiencing an issue with your HP printer, and I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. I'm here to help you today.

I'm really sorry to hear about your loss, and I can understand how frustrating it must be to inherit a printer and then run into technical issues like this. The "Instant Ink" message appears because the printer is currently set to recognize only cartridges that are enrolled in HP's Instant Ink subscription service, which is a way to get ink delivered automatically when levels run low. However, if you'd like to use your own ink cartridges, you can absolutely do that by following these steps:

1. Cancel Instant Ink Subscription (if you haven't already)

  • If the printer is still enrolled in the Instant Ink program, you need to cancel the subscription. Here’s how you can do that:
    • Log in to your HP Instant Ink account (on the HP website).
    • Go to My Account or Account Settings.
    • You should see an option to cancel the subscription, or you can call HP customer support for assistance in canceling the service.

2. Remove the Instant Ink Lock

Sometimes the printer may get locked into Instant Ink settings and won't accept third-party or non-subscription cartridges. Here's how you can unlock it:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it for about 30 seconds.
  • Reconnect the printer and turn it back on.
  • Insert the third-party or non-Instant Ink cartridge.
  • It should now accept the cartridge without the error message. If the message continues, try performing a reset on the printer:
    • On most HP printers, you can do a reset via the printer's menu or by following these steps:
      • Press and hold the Power and Cancel buttons at the same time for about 10 seconds.

I hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Thank you for your reply.  I cannot cancel the instant ink because I have no information about my brother-in-law's account.  I did turn off the printer as you suggested but I see no "cancel" button on this printer.  The message I get after installing the new instant ink cartridge is:  The indicated cartridges cannot be used until printer is enrolled in HP Instant Ink.

I looked at and downloaded the user manual.  Thank you.  I still do not see any reference to a "cancel button."  Help me here.

Hi @Rickity2020

Its not a physicall button, its just you need to  touch X (Cancel) on your printer control panel.

I hope this helps! Keep me posted.
