Hi,

When trying to manually scan or copy a document using the platen glass, I am getting a wide thick line down the middle of the scan or print. This is only when choosing this in colour - it doesn't happen in B+W.

I have thoroughly cleaned the glass plus carried out the maintenance to clean the nozzles and even done a re-alignment.

Note that when I scan to PC, the line is still there so am thinking this  may be a defect on the internal scan bar.

Printer bought in April so may have recourse to get a replacement unless anyone knows a fix.

TIA....

Hello @bucier, Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding the HP printer.

We appreciate the opportunity to assist you and are glad we could help work toward a resolution. We hope our support has been valuable.

To help us get started on resolving your issue, could you please let us know the printer's name and the model number along with the network setup of the HP device so that we can assist you further?

We are sorry to hear that you see vertical lines appearing on scanned or copied documents when using the scanner glass usually indicate debris or marks on the scanner glass or the narrow strip of glass used by the document feeder. Since you have already tried cleaning the scanner glass and the issue persists, we would request you to please follow the steps:

Try the Document Feeder (if available)

  • If your printer has an ADF (Automatic Document Feeder), try scanning through it.
  • If ADF scans are clear but flatbed scans show lines, the issue is isolated to the flatbed optics.

Reset Printer

  • Power off, unplug for 60 seconds, then restart.
  • This clears temporary glitches, though you’ve already tried this once.

Update Firmware/Software

  • Go to HP’s support site for your printer model.
  • Install the latest firmware update and HP Scan software/HP Smart app.
  • Sometimes image processing bugs cause artifacts.

Hardware Diagnosis

  • Vertical lines are often caused by a faulty CIS (Contact Image Sensor) or CCD scanner unit.
  • If cleaning and updates don’t help, the scanner sensor is likely defective.
  • Printing works fine because the print engine is separate.

Re-clean the Scanner Glass:

  • Carefully clean both the large flatbed glass and any small strip of glass adjacent to it with a soft, lint-free cloth moistened with a non-abrasive glass cleaner.
  • Ensure no streaks or residue are left behind.

Take care and have an amazing day!
