My print head carriage will not move. This is a brand new printer, and I have yet to install the print head cartridges

Hi @EricBT,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If the printhead carriage of your HP Smart Tank 7301 printer is not moving, follow these steps to resolve the issue.

Ensure Proper Setup

  • Make sure you've completed all the steps in the printer's setup guide, including removing any protective tape, foam, or packaging inside the printer.
  • Verify that the printer is connected to a power source and turned on.

Check the Printer for Obstructions

  • Open the printer cover and inspect the inside for any tape, packing material, or other obstructions preventing the carriage from moving.
  • Remove any visible material carefully.

Manually Move the Carriage (if safe to do so)

  • With the printer turned off, gently try to move the carriage by hand. If it’s stuck, do not force it; this could indicate a mechanical issue or locked mechanism.

Power Cycle the Printer

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for about 2-3 minutes.
  • Plug it back in and turn it on to see if the carriage moves to the center.

Perform a Reset

  • Disconnect all cables, including the power cable.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect the cables and power on the printer.

Review Printer Error Messages

  • Check the printer's display screen for error messages. Follow any on-screen instructions to resolve the issue.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
