I installed a new ink cartridge black and made approximately 40 copies in black n white and then the ink registered low ink. Any suggestions

@BBB67, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Check for Hidden Ink Usage

Were the pages text-only or did they include graphics, shading, or images?

Photos and grayscale images use a lot more ink than pure black text.

Draft Mode can reduce ink usage. Try enabling it:

Go to Printer Preferences > Quality Settings > Draft.

Run Print Diagnostics

On your printer:
Settings > Tools > Print Quality Report

Also try a “Print Diagnostic Page” from the printer settings or HP Smart app.

Check for:

Blurry/faded print: might trigger more ink usage due to reprinting.

Misalignment or smudging: can waste ink via cleaning cycles.

Run HP Print and Scan Doctor (Windows only):

Update Printer Firmware (Update the firmware on an HP printer | HP® Support)

  • Go to the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads page. Enter your printer model number and search for the latest firmware update. Follow the instructions to download and install the firmware update.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
