My HP 5540 prints everything in black and white from my HP windows 11 laptop. I installed a new color print cartridge and I aligned the print heads and the normal color alignment pate is printed,
I cleaned the print heads multiple times.
I used the HP print doctor and when asked to print a test page, it was black and white.

Hi @tburditt,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
Try these steps:
Check Printer Settings
Verify Printing Preferences:
- On your computer, go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
- Right-click your HP 5540 printer and select Printing Preferences.
- Check if the settings are set to Print in Grayscale. If they are, switch to Color.
Check Advanced Settings:
- In the Printing Preferences dialog, go to the Paper/Quality tab.
- Ensure that Color is selected instead of Black & White.
Use HP Smart App
- Download HP Smart App from the Microsoft Store if you haven't already.
- Open the app and run a test print. The HP Smart App sometimes overrides printer driver settings and helps diagnose the issue more effectively.
Update Printer Drivers and Firmware
Update Printer Driver:
- Go to the HP Support Website.
- Download the latest driver for your printer model and operating system.
- Install the update and restart your computer.
Update Firmware:
- On the HP Support Website, check for any firmware updates available for your printer model.
- Follow the instructions to update the printer firmware.
Check Cartridge Installation
- Ensure the color cartridge is properly seated in its slot.
- Confirm that no protective tape remains on the cartridge which might block the nozzle.
I hope this helps.
