I have an HP OfficeJet Pro 9010. It has been telling me the red ink cartridge needs to be replaced. I have an HP subscription for ink, so the cartridges are meant for this printer. I keep replacing the red cartridge per the instructions And it does not seem to register with the printer. It still tells me I need to replace the cartridge after I’ve already done so.

@AG1665, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds frustrating that your HP printer isn't recognizing the genuine HP Instant Ink cartridge, especially when you're using an official subscription cartridge. Here’s a step-by-step checklist to help resolve this issue:
Check Cartridge Authenticity and Compatibility
- Ensure you are using a subscription (Instant Ink) cartridge. These cartridges are region-locked and specific to your printer model.
- Verify that the label on the cartridge has “Instant Ink” printed on it.
Try a Full Power Reset
- Sometimes, printers cache cartridge status incorrectly. Here’s how to reset:
- Turn on the printer.
- With it powered on, unplug the power cord from both the printer and the wall outlet.
- Wait for 60 seconds.
- Plug everything back in and turn the printer on.
- Reinsert the magenta cartridge and check if the error clears.
Clean Cartridge Contacts
- Poor electrical contact between the cartridge and printer can cause recognition issues:
- Power off the printer.
- Remove the magenta cartridge.
- Gently clean the copper contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer using a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol.
- Allow everything to dry before reinserting the cartridge.
Ensure the Printer is Online & Connected to HP
- Instant Ink requires regular internet synchronization to validate cartridges:
- Go to Settings > Network > Wireless Summary or a similar option.
- Ensure the printer is connected to Wi-Fi.
- Check your HP Smart app or your HP account at hp.com to verify the subscription status and device connectivity.
Update the Firmware
- Outdated firmware can lead to cartridge errors with subscription models:
- From the printer screen, navigate to:
- Settings > Printer Maintenance > Update the Printer.
- Alternatively, use the HP Smart app and go to Advanced Settings to check for updates.
- From the printer screen, navigate to:
Try a Cartridge Reseating Cycle
- Remove all cartridges from the printer:
- Power cycle the printer (turn it off and back on).
- Insert the magenta cartridge first, then add the others one by one.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
