Hi @mary44441,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand your HP Deskjet 1512 might not be recognizing the new cartridge as an HP one. Here are a few steps you can try to resolve the issue:
- Check Cartridge Compatibility: Ensure the cartridge you've installed is compatible with the HP Deskjet 1512. Even if it's an HP cartridge, it needs to be the correct model for your printer.
- Remove and Reinsert the Cartridge: Turn off the printer, open the cartridge access door, remove the cartridge, and then reinsert it. Make sure it clicks into place and is securely seated.
- Clean the Cartridge Contacts: Sometimes the contacts on the cartridge or inside the printer can get dirty. Use a soft, lint-free cloth to gently clean the contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer.
- Check for Protective Tape: If it's a new cartridge, ensure that any protective tape or plastic covering the ink nozzles has been removed.
- Update Printer Firmware: Sometimes, firmware updates can resolve cartridge recognition issues. Check if there's an update available for your printer on the HP website. Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Reset the Printer: Try resetting your printer to its factory settings. This can sometimes resolve recognition issues.
- Try a Different Cartridge: If possible, try installing a different HP cartridge to see if the issue persists. This can help determine if the problem is with the cartridge or the printer itself.

I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
