Hi @Tony4Z ,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 is displaying empty ink levels after you've just installed brand-new cartridges, there could be a few reasons for this:
- Check Cartridge Installation: Make sure the cartridges are seated correctly in the printer. Sometimes cartridges might not be fully inserted, causing the printer to not recognize them. Remove the cartridges and reinstall them firmly, making sure they snap into place.
- Clean Cartridge Contacts: The electrical contacts on the cartridges and inside the printer might be dirty. Use a clean, lint-free cloth to wipe down the contacts on both the cartridge and the printer.
- Restart the Printer: A simple restart can sometimes fix glitches that cause inaccurate ink level readings. Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source for a few minutes, and then plug it back in and turn it on.
- Update Drivers: Outdated printer drivers can also lead to issues with ink level recognition. Check the HP website for any available driver updates for your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 and install them. HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 Wide Format All-in-One Printer series
- Software or firmware issue: Occasionally, software glitches or outdated firmware can cause incorrect ink level readings. Try updating your printer's firmware to the latest version, which you can usually find on HP's support website. Also, make sure your printer drivers are up to date. - Printer calibration: Sometimes, printers need to recalibrate after installing new cartridges. This process might take a bit of time, but the ink levels should normalize after a while. You can try restarting your printer to see if it recalibrates itself.
- Genuine HP Cartridges: HP recommends using genuine HP ink cartridges. Third-party cartridges may not be compatible with your printer and might cause inaccurate ink level readings.
- Reset the Printer: Try resetting your printer to factory settings. This can sometimes clear up any software issues that might be causing the problem. Consult your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 user manual for instructions on how to reset the printer.

I hope this helps.
