Printer Envy 4500 I thought the black ink needed to be replaced- now another "ink cartridge needs to be replaced- I'm not sure if the new  black is bad, or the color needs to be replaced, too- it says the "bow tie" need replacement- which is that?

I understand the "bow tie" icon on HP printers typically represents the tri-color cartridge. It is a visual indicator used by HP to distinguish between the black ink cartridge and the tri-color cartridge. Here's how you can address the issue:

 

Steps to Identify and Fix the Issue:

Check the Cartridge Status:

  • On the printer's display screen or via the HP Smart app (if connected to your computer), check for any additional messages or icons that specify which cartridge has an issue.

Verify the Tri-Color Cartridge:

  • Since the "bow tie" symbol is for the tri-color cartridge, it is likely that the color cartridge needs to be replaced.

Reinstall the Cartridges:

  • Remove both the black and color cartridges.
  • Check for any protective tape that may not have been fully removed from the new black cartridge.
  • Gently clean the copper contacts on both cartridges using a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Reinstall the cartridges securely.

Run a Printer Test:

  • From the printer’s menu, print a test page or align the cartridges.
  • This will help confirm if the issue is resolved or if one of the cartridges still has a problem.

Replace the Color Cartridge if Necessary:

  • If the printer still shows the "bow tie" symbol, replace the tri-color cartridge with a new, genuine HP cartridge compatible with your printer model.

Check for Firmware Updates: Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Make sure your printer firmware is up-to-date. Outdated firmware may misread cartridge statuses.
