Hi @Surelee79,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand the cartridge problem you're encountering on your HP OfficeJet 8020 series printer can be frustrating, especially after multiple attempts to resolve it. Let's go through the steps systematically to address the issue.

1. Verify Cartridge Compatibility

Ensure that the cartridges you're using are genuine HP 910 cartridges and are compatible with the OfficeJet 8020 series. Counterfeit or incompatible cartridges may cause errors.

2. Check the Printer for Updates

Firmware updates can fix cartridge recognition issues:

  1. Access the printer's settings:
    • On the printer's control panel, go to Setup or Settings.
    • Select Printer Maintenance or Update the Printer.
  2. Install any available updates.

Alternatively:

  • Use the HP Smart app on your computer or phone to check for and install updates.

3. Clean the Cartridge ContactsHow to Clean Printer Heads: A Guide to Better Ink Efficiency

Cleaning the contacts can resolve recognition errors:

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  2. Open the printer to access the cartridges.
  3. Remove the cartridge and use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to clean:
    • The gold-colored contacts on the cartridge.
    • The contacts inside the cartridge slot.
  4. Allow everything to dry completely, then reinsert the cartridge.

4. Perform a Printer Reset

Resetting can sometimes clear error messages:

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it from the wall.
  2. Wait for at least 60 seconds.
  3. Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
  4. Reinsert the cartridge if prompted.

5. Check the Cartridge Locking Mechanism

Ensure the cartridges are seated correctly:

  1. Remove and reinsert the cartridge.
  2. Ensure the cartridge clicks into place and the cartridge door is fully closed.

6. Run the Printer Diagnostics Tool HP Print and Scan Doctor

  1. Download the HP Print and Scan Doctor from HP's website.
  2. Run the tool to detect and fix cartridge-related issues.

7. Inspect the Printer for Damage

Inspect the cartridge slot and locking mechanism for any physical damage or debris. A bent pin or foreign object can prevent the printer from detecting the cartridge correctly.

8. Test with Another Cartridge

Even genuine cartridges can occasionally be defective. If possible, test with a new, unopened HP 910 cartridge.
