I have a Photosmart 6520 that is not printing black ink. It has not been used for 6 months. A new genuine  black cartridge was installed. the clean printhead option was used 6 times and no improvement.

Hi @3359,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It's not uncommon for inkjet printers to experience issues with ink flow, especially after a period of disuse. Here are some steps you can take to try and resolve the issue with your HP Photosmart 6520 printer not printing black ink:

Print Quality Diagnostic: Most printers have a diagnostic or test page that you can print to assess the overall print quality. Look for an option in your printer's settings or control panel to print a diagnostic page. Check if the diagnostic page shows any issues with the black ink, such as streaks or missing segments.

Printhead Cleaning:

  • Perform a deeper printhead cleaning through the printer's maintenance or settings menu. This option is usually available in the printer's control panel or through the printer software on your computer.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to run the printhead cleaning process. This may take several minutes to complete.

Manual Printhead Cleaning:

  • If the automatic printhead cleaning doesn't resolve the issue, you can try manually cleaning the printhead.
  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Open the printer cover to access the printhead.
  • Moisten a lint-free cloth with distilled water and gently wipe the printhead to remove any dried ink or debris.
  • Be careful not to touch the nozzles or electrical contacts on the printhead.
  • Allow the printhead to dry completely before reinstalling it in the printer and powering it back on.

Replace Ink Cartridge: Even if the ink cartridge is new, it's possible that the black ink cartridge may be faulty or dried out, especially after six months of disuse. Consider replacing the black ink cartridge with a new one to see if that resolves the issue.

Firmware Update: Check if there are any firmware updates available for your HP Photosmart 6520 printer. Sometimes, firmware updates can address known issues and improve printer performance.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
