HP Recommended

I purchased an HP 65xl printer cartridge at Wal-Mart and it was defective.  I tried to take it back to Wal-Mart but they wouldn't take it back because the box was opened.  Of course the box was opened because I bought it for my printer.  They said I had to contact HP directly.  This is SO frustrating.  Can you help?
