Hi @Janiedbrown56,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be glad to help you!
If your HP DeskJet 4155e is showing the new black ink cartridge as empty and refusing to print, despite installing a new one, here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:
1. Check Cartridge Compatibility
- Ensure Correct Cartridge Model: Make sure that the new black ink cartridge is the correct model for your printer. The HP DeskJet 4155e typically uses HP 67 or HP 67XL cartridges. Check the packaging or the cartridge itself for the model number.
2. Reseat the Ink Cartridges
- Turn Off the Printer: Power off the printer and unplug it from the wall outlet.
- Open the Cartridge Access Door: Wait until the carriage stops moving.
- Remove and Reinsert the Cartridges:
- Carefully remove both the color and black cartridges.
- Inspect them for any packaging materials or tape that might be covering the contacts or nozzles, and remove any you find.
- Reinsert the cartridges, ensuring they click into place correctly.
- Close the Cartridge Access Door and power on the printer.
3. Clean the Cartridge Contacts
- Turn Off the Printer: Unplug it from the power source.
- Remove the Cartridge:
- Take out the black cartridge from the printer.
- Clean the Contacts:
- Use a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water to gently clean the electrical contacts on the cartridge (the gold-colored areas).
- Also, clean the corresponding contacts inside the printer.
- Allow to Dry: Let the contacts air dry for a few minutes before reinserting the cartridge.
4. Check for Firmware Updates
- Update Printer Firmware:
- Make sure your printer's firmware is up-to-date. Go to the HP Support website, enter your printer model, and download any available firmware updates.
5. Align the Printer
- Use Printer Software:
- Open the HP Smart app or HP Printer Assistant on your computer.
- Look for an option to Align or Calibrate the Printer. Follow the on-screen instructions to perform the alignment.
Please find the remaining steps in the next post.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Hi @Janiedbrown56 ,
Please find the remaining steps below.
6. Perform a Printer Reset
- Reset the Printer:
- With the printer turned on, unplug the power cord from the back of the printer and the wall outlet.
- Wait for 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.
7. Disable Cartridge Protection
- Disable Cartridge Protection Settings:
- In the HP Smart app or HP Printer Assistant, navigate to Settings > Printer Maintenance or Printer Security.
- Look for an option related to Cartridge Protection and ensure it is disabled.
8. Try Another Cartridge
- Test Another Cartridge: If possible, try using a different new black cartridge. Sometimes, a new cartridge might be defective.
By following these steps, you should be able to resolve the issue with the new black ink cartridge not being recognized.
You may check this document and if required, perform the steps on the cartridge error.
