I’ve replaced my HP 964 ink cartridge with new ones and I’m getting an error message telling me to replace the yellow cartridge with a non empty cartridge. The printer is not allowing me to do anything except scan documents

I understand your printer is still showing “Replace Yellow Cartridge with a Non-Empty Cartridge” even after installing new ink. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

    a. Reseat the Yellow Cartridge
        Open the ink access door and gently remove the yellow cartridge.
        Check if the orange protective tape or vent tab is still attached and remove it if present.
        Reinsert the cartridge firmly until it clicks into place.

    b. Clean Cartridge and Printer Contacts
        Gently wipe the copper/gold contacts on the yellow cartridge with a dry lint-free cloth.
        Also clean the contact points inside the printer where the cartridge sits.

    c. Power Reset the Printer
        With the printer turned on, unplug the power cord from the wall and printer.
        Wait 60 seconds, then plug it directly into a wall outlet (avoid extension cords).
        Turn the printer back on and check if the error clears.

    d. Try Another Cartridge (If Available)
        If you have another yellow HP 964 cartridge, insert it to check if the printer recognizes it.
        If it works, the previous cartridge may have been faulty.

    e. Check Firmware/Printer Updates (If Menu Access Is Available)
        If the printer allows you to access the menu, go to:
        Setup → Printer Maintenance → Update Printer / Firmware Update
        Make sure the printer is connected to Wi-Fi before updating.

    f. Inspect Ink Vents on Cartridge
        Check the small vent on top of the yellow cartridge (under the label).
        If it looks clogged with adhesive or ink, gently clear it with a pin or paperclip.

    g. Restart the Printer Without Cartridges (Ink System Reset)
        Remove all cartridges from the printer.
        Turn the printer off, unplug power for 60 seconds.
        Reconnect power, turn it on, then reinsert each cartridge one by one.
