Welcome to HP Support Community,
Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue
Are pigment inks only available in Black and not in Colors?
- Generally, pigment inks are primarily used in black ink cartridges. This is because pigment inks are more durable and water-resistant, making them ideal for text printing, particularly when you need it to last. For colored prints, it typically uses dye-based inks, which are vibrant but less resistant to water and fading than pigment inks.
Do Genuine HP 952 cartridges use Pigment Inks for all 4 colors or Dye INKS for the HP 8710?
- The Genuine HP 952 ink cartridges use pigment-based ink for black and dye-based ink for the color cartridges (cyan, magenta, yellow) in the HP OfficeJet Pro 8710. This combination gives you the sharpness and longevity of pigment black and the vibrant colors of dye-based ink for color prints.
Can you use Dye inks in the HP 8710?
- Yes, the HP 8710 is designed to use dye-based inks for the color cartridges (cyan, magenta, yellow). However, it is best to use the recommended HP 952 cartridges to ensure compatibility and the best quality prints.
If you mix and match cartridges HP 952's dye and pigment inks as you run out of ink, will it damage and clog the printhead in the HP 8710 printer?
- Mixing different types of ink (dye and pigment) in the same printer may cause issues, such as clogging the printhead, inconsistent print quality, or possible damage to the printer. It’s always safest to use the same type of ink that the printer was designed for. If you’re replacing cartridges, try to stick to the same HP 952 cartridges for best results.
Is available print head cleaning solution the best for cleaning the print head? Do such work for both Dye and Pigment inks?
- Printhead cleaning solutions can be effective for cleaning both dye and pigment inks, but it’s important to follow the proper guidelines. For specific maintenance instructions, it's always best to refer to the user manual.
Additional Advice: For a suitable ink cartridge for your HP 8710, I recommend using Genuine HP cartridges. Mixing ink types (dye and pigment) or using non-recommended inks could lead to poor print quality and potential damage to the printer, which is why sticking with the recommended inks is crucial.

Thanks for your answer. On Amazon I purchased a set of 3rd party cartridges that said hp952xl compatible. They used sublimation ink inside and I ruined a printhead due to clogging. Learned the hard way. Many vendors on Amazon sell pigment inks for all 4 colors. Clogs printhead needs more cleaning. There is a lot of HP compatible junk being sold as compatible and they ruined 2 printheads in two printers by clogging up the nozzles. They work at first but afterwards result in nozzles clogs. Also the colors are faded compared to genuine HP cartridges.
Anyone in the community care to recommend a third party compatible supplier for the HP 952XL cartridge set?

Hey, I totally get your frustration! 🙄 That’s a rough experience with those third-party cartridges. It’s true, some of the "compatible" ones just aren’t up to par and can cause a lot of headaches, especially with clogs and faded colors. 😔
By the way, if you're interested, I can definitely help you with sourcing genuine HP cartridges. Just let me know! 😄
Take care and looking forward to hearing from you soon!
