HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 Wide Format All-in-One Printer

I need help fixing a printer. It said it was needing yellow ink, so I replaced the cartridge, but it won't work. I can't print anything, not even in black & white. It is the correct cartridge & it's brand new, but it keeps telling me to replace it.

Hi @SabineP,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Verify Cartridge Compatibility: Ensure that the cartridge you installed is compatible with your printer. The HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 is typically compatible with HP 952 and 952XL cartridges. Double-check the packaging to confirm compatibility.

Reinstall the Cartridge:

  • Turn off the printer and open the cartridge access door.
  • Remove the yellow ink cartridge and inspect it for any protective tape or packaging that wasn’t removed. Installing cartridges with the tape on can prevent the printer from reading them.
  • Reinsert the cartridge and ensure it clicks securely into place.

Check for Firmware Updates: Sometimes, a printer's firmware needs to be updated to correctly recognize new cartridges. Check the HP website for any available updates for your model.

Clean Cartridge Contacts:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Remove the yellow ink cartridge from the printer.
  • Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to gently clean the electrical contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer.
  • Allow them to dry completely before reinstalling the cartridge.

Reset the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from any power source for about a minute.
  • Plug the printer back in and power it on.
  • Try to print a test page to see if the issue persists.

Check the Printer Status: Make sure there are no error messages or warnings on the printer’s display panel. If any appear, resolve them according to the instructions provided.

I hope this helps.
